The Santarena Hotel is a bohemian pearl perched between two of Costa Rica's loveliest Pacific beaches, at the heart of the walkable beach town of Las Catalinas in the Guanacaste region.

Santarena has a noble spirit, like an old soul in the heart of Las Catalinas, and evokes the elegance of coastal Central American mansions.

Santarena stands at the meeting point of three town roads, an open gathering place surrounded by plazas and lively thoroughfares.

The traveler moves seamlessly into the lobby of the hotel, a transition aided by the hotel’s casual integration into the structures of the neighborhood from which is draws its life.

The lobby is the heartbeat of the place, with the familiar feel of a city hotel on the beach.

All around, natural textures speak to the feel that this place is aged, with fixtures that combine industrial and elegance in a unique balance.

The chairs at Santarena are Masaya-style custom patterns and colors, made by d-Aqui Design in collaboration with Masaya and Co. from Nicaragua.

Wood furniture is mixed with hand-woven fabrics, in colors that complement the floor tiles.

Santarena places great emphasis on details. Many elements of the hotel are handmade using traditional techniques dating back centuries, like the floor tiles, which are cast in molds and poured by hand.

The natural progression as you enter Santarena is through the atrium, which is showered in greenery and life.

Santarena is an homage to the old mansions of the great coastal cities of Havana and Cartagena, with subtle accents

Vibrant patterns are more the accent than the centerpiece, and the textures are balanced to add life without distracting.

The Atrium is a place that feels outdoors and indoors at the same time, tropical in its essence and welcoming to the sun with its soaring windows.

The Atrium is a gathering place for breakfast, a refreshing juice after a long day at the beach, or a good read.

Sunlight is a constant presence, and plays a crucial role in Santarena’s architecture and interior design

In addition to naturally social spaces, Santarena has places to sit, relax, and enjoy a good book or a chat.

Stylish accommodations and inviting public spaces are seamlessly woven with gracious hospitality

The bedrooms of Santarena are muted and laid back, a refreshing atmosphere to recover and relax after a lively day in town.

Details come in many shapes and sizes

Rooms with high ceilings, handmade hardwood floors, and large windows invite plentiful natural light.

Some rooms have balconies, while the others have a peaceful, small garden to enjoy.

Open the doors up to the balcony and you will be welcomed by colorful handmade tiles resemblant of the hues and shades around town, cast in star and firework patterns, like a topical explosion of color.

Rich woods are complemented by handcrafted fabrics in Santarena’s rooms.

Carrara marble stonework is handmade and light fixtures are made onsite

The 45 guest rooms at Santarena spread among four floors, and provide places to rest, recover, and recharge between active sunny days and social evenings.

The rooftop terrace draws from traditional city-hotel stylings, further enhancing the energy of the space as one that, despite its beach location, is undeniably urban, and an active part of Las Catalinas Beach Town

The Conservatory is Santarena Hotel’s main indoor event venue equipped for celebrations, award dinners, meetings, corporate retreats, receptions, indoor yoga sessions and more.

With ocean views, the Conservatory is decorated with blonde wood floors, pleated full-length draperies, and neutral toned walls. The space can easily be transformed to fit a rainbow of needs.

This space features tall glass wood-framed doors facing the Plaza Danta beachfront on one side and an internal courtyard with a quaint fountain and garden on the other, which connects to the Study.

Connected to the Conservatory through the interior courtyard and through a door in the Conservatory, Santarena’s study is an elegant private space ideal for small meetings and worksessions, with a large handmade wooden table and comfortable leather chairs.

Plentiful natural light and rich wood tones provide a lively, creative energy to these spaces

The interested observer can track the energy of the hotel through each aspect of its design -- from the stimulation upon entry, the movement to a cooler, more subtle area in the atrium, the relaxing journey through the hallways, ultimately culminating in the sanctum of the bedroom with a little splash of different colors of the balcony.

All around, natural textures speak to the feel that this place is aged, but adapted to modern times, with fixtures that blend industrial and rustic elements

Ponciana is Santarena Hotel’s signature restaurant & bar, a welcomig space conceived by the influence of Biarritz 1972 and inspired by Basque cuisine and joie de vivre.

Santarena’s indoor part of the bar presents an intimate space with an opportunity for close conversation or chance meetings of interesting characters and personalities, and is still integrated into town through it’s exterior part.

The Terrace on Plaza Danta is a welcoming space with ocean views in which the people in Town interact and connect over breakfast, cocktails, pintxos, dinner, or lively conversation

Oh, hello! Bienvenidos a Santarena!

At the Santarena Hotel, stylish accommodations and inviting public spaces are seamlessly woven with gracious hospitality throughout, offering an experience that is consciously crafted and truly valuable.

A Design for People

The hotel was designed very consciously to facilitate its experience and its aesthetic.

It is subtle, unnoticeable even during the flow of every day of life, but the interested observer can track the energy of the hotel through each aspect of its design -- from the explosion of happiness and stimulation upon entry, the movement to a cooler, more subtle area in The Atrium, the relaxing journey through the hallways, ultimately culminating in the sanctum of the bedroom with a little flash of color of the balcony.

By drawing from local materials like crafted tiles and wood fixtures by local artists, the hotel was built from the ground up to be a place for the gathering of ideas, the exchange of stories, and the coming together of people.

The “Living Room” of Town

The origin of Santarena is a vision of something special, even within a special town. In many ways, the hotel feels like the living room of town, where guests feel welcomed. The hotel has a noble spirit, that of an old soul in the heart of our beach town. Think old sports cars with a surfboard in the back, filled with a couple equally at home during a day at the beach as at a state dinner.

The building is senorial, grand, and beckons forth with age-old stories and tales of adventure.

Adventure Just Footsteps Away

The hotel is steps away from one of the region's best beaches, Playa Danta, a local favorite for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. Also, over 1,000 acres of protected forest interlaced with a world-class ocean view single-track mountain bike trail system are located just a few minutes away.

Day trips by sea, land, and sky can also be arranged and are encouraged for those interested in exploring the area’s interior and surrounding attractions.

Dining and Imbibing

The hotel has several options for dining and imbibing in a variety of picturesque settings in addition to a “grab and go” bakery (Cuatro Calle la Ronda) and room delivery.

Breakfast is offered in The Atrium, a relatively casual indoor and outdoor space just off The Lobby. Afternoon pintxos and beverages ranging from detox smoothies to proper evening cocktails are available at the restaurant either indoors or at the covered terrace facing the plaza and Playa Danta.

Meanwhile, the dinner atmosphere shifts to a chic sophisticated setting in the hotel's signature restaurant Ponciana. On Saturdays Sunset Gin Tonics are available at the rooftop pool and lounge.

A Room to Breathe

The 45 bedrooms of Santarena are muted and laid back, a refreshing atmosphere to recover and relax after a lively day in town.

However, open the doors up to the balcony and you will be welcomed by colorful handmade tiles resembling the hues and shades around town, cast in star patterns like an explosion of fireworks, reflecting the energy of the rest of the town.

All accommodations have king beds, sustainable wood floors, and spacious bathrooms; most include private balconies with striking handmade Cuban style pressed tiles.

A Place to Gather

Unique indoor and outdoor spaces, a wide variety of activities to experience, and exemplary service throughout make Santarena an ideal base for business and social events.

The hotel's thoughtfully designed and versatile range of facilities are fully equipped with the latest technology and an array of amenities to seamlessly serve special gatherings ranging from professional or cultural groups and team-building trips to sports and wellness retreats.
